P300e - "EV temporarily not available"

Good Morning,

I'm curious to see if anyone has had the same experience with their P300e.

This morning, while in Hybrid mode, I noticed that the petrol engine was running rather than the EV as it normally does on short trips. After about 15 mins, I pulled up at some lights and switched it off and then back on again. The car pulls away in EV and all seemed fine. A little later the petrol cuts in again and remains on, I try and force EV but get the following message "EV temporarily not available". Once again, pull over, switch off the car, and switch it back on, EV works fine until the petrol cuts in again and we are back into the same cycle.

Interestingly, the EV is working because if you put your foot down or go up a hill, you feel and see the EV engine cut in to support the petrol.

Has anyone had anything similar happen with their P300e?

Thanks

If you select EV mode when there's insufficient charge in the battery pack the system comes up with the message: "EV mode temporarily unavailable".

I have a message that says "EV Mode Temporarily Unavailable". Does this mean there is a fault?
No. Sometimes when there is a high electrical load on the vehicle (for example when the air conditioning is working at full power to cool the interior when the vehicle has been parked in the sun) power is routed away from the hybrid system and EV mode temporarily becomes unavailable. This can also happen when the engine is cold and will take longer to clear in cold weather, or when Automatic Terrain Response is engaged for off-road driving. The message will clear once conditions change.

35 miles!!

I've had mine 2 months and done 1000 miles (800 on EV) and never seen more than 26 predicted after full charge other than the day I picked it up where it showed 32.

I must have a heavy right foot 😮

As to your question I'm obsessed about driving EV only so always start in EV only and have never had the ICE start unless I've ran out of electrons.

I've started in -2 outside temp, heaters and heated seats on and still full journey in EV.

It's the thing I'm most impressed with. When (rarely) switching to hybrid it really doesn't like being in EV and the slightest prod away from the lights or wind up the air con or basically just drive it and ICE activates.

So until I run out of KW juice I just drive in EV as it merrily takes me up to cruising speed and beyond.

Do you drive mostly in hybrid mode?

Thanks for the reply.

First off , a quick update. The car sorted its life out the following day and has behaved ever since. No idea what caused the problem, it was fully charged and it wasn't cold but for 24 hours it just wouldn't run in EV mode at all.

One of the benefits of WFH at the moment is I can get to do the school run. - honest! The school run is a 28 mile country lane round trip. I've never managed it just on EV but have come close. So, the 0-60 speed game of my youth has now been replaced with the 'what is the max mpg I can get out of this thing on the school run'. Best so far is 224 mpg for the whole trip, so not too bad at all.

The max charge distance has a mind of its own, no real pattern. I know there must be some logic being used but at times I suspect the programmer who wrote the algorithm just got bored and put in a randomiser to generate a number somewhere between 26 and 36 miles. 70% of the time it's 32, sometimes 34 and on a very view days 35 and on one occasion it even got to the dizzy heights of 36 but in pulling off the driveway, it dropped it to 32 in a matter of seconds - so who really knows!

One thing I have noticed which really pleased me is that the car does actually charge itself. I noticed in one post that someone disputed this previous observation that had been made by a fellow p300e owner. However I can assure you it really does. If you switch to 'save' mode i.e. pure ICE, the percentage charge will slowly increase. On a 200 mile round trip last week it went from 2% charge to 60% over a period of 75 miles. Has anyone else noticed this?

So far i've covered 5500 miles of which I've managed c3000 on EV according to the logs. I tend to just drive it mainly in hybrid and let it do it's own thing but I agree with other people's comments - the MY21 DS is a fantastic car and the p300e bit in particular for all it's minor faults/features.

I registered my Disco P300e R-dynamic in January this year. EV mode was running fine until about 1500 miles, in April. Since then, the petrol engine starts immediately when the car ignition is started (on a full charge and with air-con switched off). Dash says 'EV temporarily not available'. The EV kicks in after 1-2 mins when the car comes to a stop, e.g. at a traffic light or junction. The EV mode can then become randomly unavailable again during parts of any journey. I just booked the car in for a diagnostic - annoyed to find that no courtesy cars are available and the investigation will take 2 days. Would be interested to hear any other instances of this fault, as it sounds like it is quite common.

I'll be brief and give the edited highlights. Our P300e was registered on December 29th. It was great for the first few months, range as others have seen, mid 20s in the cold. March 26, the car stopped abruptly on our driveway and gave a battery fault at 1187 miles. It hasn't moved anywhere under its own power since.

We have been in loan cars since and we have agreed a deal with LR to compensate. They diagnosed a failed inverter and have been waiting on a part, which is due any day. I think I saw the ev not available message once or twice, but it was mainly my wife's car. If you have weird faults behaviour with the EV I'd get it checked out...

We've started to have similar, and worse, issues.

The car refused to move (while in traffic), saying "EV temporarily not available". This was then compounded by the ICE refusing to start either. So we have twice in the last week been stuck like lemons in the middle of the road. After 5 mins the ICE started to work, after a fashion and got us home.

LR Assist just came out and spent 1.5 hours uploading new software…into a car which is 6 months old and has done 5k miles. After which, the car now seems to work in ICE mode, but refuses to use EV, even when in hybrid.

Going to call the local dealer tmrw and get the car booked in for a full diagnostic test. It's deeply unimpressive for a brand new £50k car. Especially as this is the 4th issue, one of the other ones was a major fault too.

Either this improves soon or I'm cutting my losses.

Withnail, this is the very worst scenario for the owner of a new car, once you lose confidence in the car it is very difficult to regain it, especially when (as may happen) the dealer says, either: they can't find a fault or they say it is fixed and you just know they haven't really done anything other than reboot systems!!!

Withnail, we had exactly this but thankfully were on our driveway, but it didn't, and as far as I can tell still hasn't, come back on. That was on the 26th March, the car has been with the dealer since then. They got a part in this week that they had been waiting on, so I'm hoping to hear soon weather we get ours back. But looking on the remote app it's not moved and the mileage is exactly the same.

Some of these checks may help:

The following conditions may prevent the EV mode being enabled, or may prompt an engine restart if the EV mode is already active:

Selecting Sport (S). See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

Mud ruts or sand program is selected. See TERRAIN RESPONSE.

A steering wheel paddle shift is used to select a gear. See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION.

The wade sensing feature is currently active. See WADE SENSING.

The auto stop/start system is deselected. See DEACTIVATING AUTO STOP/START.

The vehicle's battery charge levels are too low.

The vehicle's batteries are not at the required operating temperature.

The vehicle's current power demand exceeds the electrical power capability, displayed in the instrument panel's power gauge. See HYBRID VEHICLE INFORMATION.

High demand from the heating and ventilation systems.

The bonnet is opened.

The ambient temperature is less than -4°C.

In all of the previously listed events, the instrument panel displays a relevant message. Also, the instrument panel does not illuminate the EV message.

I've had this issue twice now where the car just stays with the engine running even when stopped at traffic lights and I have plenty of charge and no heaters/air on running and EV mode selected. No error message or even say EV mode unavailable. I've tried flicking between modes whilst driving but nothing seems to help. The next day it seems fine again. It's one of those issues I feel that the dealer just won't know what to do or even believe you as it will work fine when you give it to them. As someone else on this thread said they will probably just reboot it and say it's fine.

This is why I won't entertain one of these vehicles.

Land Rover seem to take great delight in getting their customers to be their unpaid test drivers with any new technology….not sure I'd want to shell out upwards of £50k on a car that's only real testing has been carried out on a track! I'll stick with the tried and tested oil burner ta….

has anyone got to the bottom of this issue? Mine was register march 2021 and once it got to 1500 miles this issue started to appear.
I sent it to the dealer but surprisingly they said they could not replicate the problem. However, they said they discovered software faults so they did software upgrade.

I noticed that when the fan is (not the AC) on it starts with hybrid mode and refuses to go to EV mode with the message EV temporarily not available. If I switch the fan off to zero it accepts to switch to EV mode.

The dealer told me there were few experiencing similar problem but for different reasons and some needed parts replaced.. has anyone else experienced the same issue?

Can't speak for everyone but I'm on my third replacement heater unit and I have absolutely zero faith it's not going to need a 4th, 5th and 6th. First one failed after 6 months...next one lasted 7 months. About due for the next!
Between myself and my husband we've had 20+ cars in our lives and we've had a handful of issues - with the p300e we've had more issues in just under 2 years than in our lifetimes.
Hand it back and dance out of the showroom!
Thanks for your reply, I had wondered about the outcomes of the replacement and if it worked.

Hi

Same here and this morning have figured it is when I turn on the heating it flips over from EV to Hybrid - turn heating off and it will then let me put into EV mode. Had the car since Oct 2020 and all last winter did not have this issue and used EV each day all day. Does anyone know if there is anything I cn do except freeze in my car if I want to use EV???!! Guess its a job for the dealer??? Hope not as its not near and have had probs with courtesy car in the pst.

Hi,

I've had the same issue, however I discovered it is caused by the climate control.

Basically if the "blower" is on, the EV is off, regardless of the driving conditions, if air on is selected or not or whatever temperature.

Driving permanently without the the blower = EV is ALWAYS available. Had the car since November last year, when it was cold and blower/heater always on, never had an issue until last 2-3 months.

Incidentally, I've just discovered if I use the Remote Climate Control app and run on EV, app states running, but on entry, no heat or cooling apparent.

Service due, will update after.

Hi,

I've been having the exact same issue since 30th July. Had it in at the dealers on 9th September. They diagnosed a faulty high voltage coolant heater. They have the replacement part in stock but are not able to fit it as it requires a special tool. This tool has been on order since early August!

70 plated discovery sport (p300e) with 5k miles, car went in for diagnostics following an amber engine warning fault, and lots of misfiring, i was originally advised i was ok to keep driving it as the booking was a week away, that was 1/11/2021, result of diagnostic output, the car could suffer a catastrophic engine failure if i were to keep driving so they have taken off the road waiting on parts, advised no ETA as none available nationwide (high voltage heater).

I'll add my experience to this issue, sadly I don't have an answer and playing with heater and a/c hasn't helped in my case.

The car has done the exact same commute since we bought it In January which is 6.8 miles each way to and from my wife's place of work.

From January to 10 July, the entire journey was done in EV mode (with the car set to hybrid).

From 12 July we started seeing the ICE start up immediately and then go to EV after 1 to 2 miles. This has gradually got worse and now we get between 1 and 2 miles of the morning journey in EV whilst 3 to 4 of the afternoon journey is in EV. The ICE always starts at the beginning of the journey.

There was some chatter elsewhere in this forum that a software change may have introduced this, either deliberately or erroneously.

I will just add that the car these days shows 33 miles of EV range in the morning. It was up to a high of 37 in the summer and a low of 24 in the winter.

I have been avoiding what I expect to be a pointless call to my dealer, but I will probably go ahead and call them next week.

It would be good to have a clear answer on this from JLR. I believe Evoque drivers are experiencing the same scenario.

Hi burtonjk

Your experience does sound very similar to ours. The timing of the fault appearing in July is similar also. When I originally spoke to our dealer, they said there had been a communication from JLR along the lines of a software upgrade was causing issues similar to this. They told me I need to bring the car in and they would do a full software re-set and re-configure. However, when I took the car in they identified a fault with the high voltage coolant heater. It sounded as though ours wasn't the first car with the same problem. Incidentally, we've also had the car since January and it performed very well for the first 6 months.

Either there is a software issue causing some of these problems or there was a batch of fault coolant heaters used by the factory when our cars were made!

I find you can get the car to stay in EV mode but you have to have the climate system turned completely off. That means going into the climate 'App' on Pivi Pro and pressing the power symbol towards the top right of the screen. The temperature dials will then go completely blank. If you press the start-stop button without putting your foot on the brake you can turn the climate off and select EV mode, then press Start-Stop with your foot on the brake and you should find the car will drive in EV mode.

Could be worth giving this a try?

I fell foul buying an early MY16 DS and was subject to loads of trips back to main dealer, the car was good when trouble free so I stuck with it (with xtended warranty for 18 months). Replaced car with Mk. 2 in March 2020 and a huge improvement on early car.
So it's down to the old chestnut of underdeveloped cars and how you really need to wait for a a few years before buying a new model (from JLR) once they are sorted, they are very good: case in point, P300e

Similar issue here, bought a 2016 and had no end of trouble for the first 6-9 months with software / firmware - eventually settled down to be a really nice reliable drive. So once it became reliable I swapped it for a MY19 (late 2018) 240 diesel, think about it, new pathfinder control system but on the old chassis, active-driveline rather than Haldex, and D240 rather than the far more popular D180. So sod all support (too few to make it worth while), never going to get Second hand parts at the breakers, and no LR specialist is going to know anything about the transmission.
There's a phrase for people that do that - - mug, masochist, fool, or "early adopter"

Good luck with the P300e Guys - sure in the end it will become the new normal and all the niggles will seem like a minor snag along the way.

Pleased to hear the next S/W upgrade fixes this. Not arrived at mine yet but I await eagerly.

I can confirm that the turn climate off workaround works for me and allows the car to stay in EV mode.
