How can you tell when a re-gen is happening? My D4 used to growl like a V8 when it did a re-gen but so far I've not noticed any change in exhaust tone or engine performance. I do a lot of motorway, A road and hooing on B roads. Very few short journeys.

Bit worrying that my service indicator was reset at 11K miles (based on LR advice) as am I now driving around with potentially contaminated oil?
Only thing I've noticed is a drastic increase in fuel consumption on a per journey basis and the burning smell when turning the engine off.
Unfortunately the latter probably means that the re-gen is incomplete.

I guess mostly happens on my lovely drives from Shropshire to Amazingstoke.

During passive regeneration, only a portion of the particulate matter is converted into carbon dioxide. This is because the chemical reaction, which utilises nitrogen dioxide, is slower than the rate of engine production of particulate matter and is effective from 250°C (482°F). Above 580°C the conversion efficiency of the particulates into carbon dioxide rapidly increases. These temperatures are generally only be achieved using the active regeneration process.
This is the reason I said above that it's not just short journeys. The quote is from the downloadable DPF document dated 15 May 2015 - "Exhaust System - INGENIUM I4 2.0L Diesel - Diesel Particulate Filter - System Operation and Component Description". My interpretation of this technical narrative is that even if you were pulling 2500 Kgs of Shire Horse up Mount Snowden, i.e. getting the exhaust really hot, the passive regen would not be sufficient to get rid of all the soot and therefore an active cycle would still occur, at the latest, by 250 miles. And that's when the real dilution occurs. The thing is this. If, like me, you're happy pootling safely along A roads at 50-60 mph, or Motorways at 65-70 mph, then your driving style is going to make the system invoke active cycles on a much more frequent basis and, bingo, there goes your promised 2 year service schedule right there and here comes an oil service every 10-12K miles. What the hell would you have to do with this engine to get, say, 15K miles between services? Has anyone actually gone further than 75% of the promised mileage before needing a service? This would start to look like class action territory were it not for JLRs willingness to change the oil for free for anyone who asks - just like they did a year ago with the Evoque . So everything is ok, then?

No, because there's another great big elephant in the room in the form of all the experts who think that 2% is the maximum safe value for diesel dilution. This view of the world says that, if you run your DS for 12,000 miles and then change the oil because it has (let's be generous) 6% diesel content, you have just treated your engine to 8,000 miles of driving with progressively worsening, sub-standard lubricant. I am so glad I joined this commhnity, saw this threat coming and acted when I did.

did my service at 12000 km....
its now 17000 km and is showing next service 20100 km !!!!
8000 KM between services !!!! absolutely not acceptable

i do 100% of travel on highway at 130km/h :x

I would be very careful if I was looking for a used DS I
Would be pretty interested in service history and would only buy if it had had an inter oil change, probs anyone buying a 3 year old one means to run vehicle for several years!! Beware I say.

Had the oil service on ours yesterday @ 9500miles.

The guy in the service dept confirmed @VeryDiscoSport's post above. He was very open and honest and told me that the problem of oil dilution has nothing at all to do with short journeys and remarked that anyone within JLR who says otherwise is just bullish....g.

My local LR Dealer emailed me saying a service was due . My car was 12 months old in June, so I asked why is it due and they replied they didn't know it had an ingenium engine ! If I hadn't queried it and took it in for service I wonder what they would have done...carried out a service or phoned me to apologise :) I've done 13,000 miles to date with no indication that a service is due yet...

Had first service at 21,000 miles. not a peep from the engine since. Now north of 33,000 miles and heading towards the next service.
Vehicle has had a software update to display a service indicator when required. This bit is on trust as I don't know if the car will actually tell me it needs its next service or not (it didn't for the 21k service). We do around 18k miles a year on a mix of A/B roads and Motorways with at least two 1,500 mile trips on Holiday.

Thanks BB. So, with 12K driven since your last oil service, how many miles does it currently say on the IC until the next one is due? It appears that you can't be getting any oil dilution at all, assuming that the alerting system is working properly. I am very curious. Are there any other diesels out there like this one?

There is no menu item that shows mileage until next service on my vehicle. I only have the remaining DEF mileage for ad-blue.
I don't think that feature appeared until they changed to the 'flat' dials IC (MY 17).
There was no 'service required' message displayed at all for the 21k service. A subsequent software update was supposed to fix that so it should indicate the next service due message although only time will tell.

Like BB my 2016 model has no service due indicator it's in for its 42 k service next week however it did pop up with service due on the app around 2 months ago I phoned the garage who said this was probably a glitch on the uncontrolled system as has been highlighted on the forum but maybe not?

Thanks, lodgic and BB, that makes a lot more sense now.

Makes me wonder if my oil service indicator should have just been reset (on instructions from LR) and not had an actual oil change now.

I havent read all of this quite long thread, so excuse me if this has been covered!

Does these issues with oil dilution by diesel during DPF regeneration also affect the 2,2L?

And wouldnt it be better to do a regeneration the old way by driving 10-15 min on 3000 rpm once in a while?

Anyway, my opinion of long oil change intervals on diesels is that its gambling with the engine. Max 1 year or 12-15 k km will be my guidelines independent of LR recomondations. EGR systems pollutes the oil so much and degrades the oil. On my former D3 with blanked EGRs I changed oil twice a year at 7-8k km.

Got down to Euro Tunnel a few weeks ago with 14.5K miles on clock - about to depart on a 2.5K round trip and a service due in 1400 miles message flashed up. This despite having the quality of the oil checked a few months previous while in for some warranty work and being told that oil and filter did not need changing.
too late to worry about it then so carried on and drove 900 miles in next 2 days to our destination. service message then read service due in 1200 miles?!
Carried on driving over next few weeks and miles to service went up and down like a yoyo.
By the time I got back home after 2.5 K miles, it said service was due in 300 miles!!
Booked it in to dealer under warranty and they changed the oil and filter free of charge but told me that they wouldn't now change it at 21K when service due??!
We'll see what happens - perhaps I'll get another free oil change next summer - will be interesting to see if they try to charge me for oil on 21k service.

Hi,

I've had the car for a month now and everything is fine, everything works as expected. I checked the ad blue when I picked it up (fully topped up) and it indicated 8500 miles (with 6 miles on the clock). Covered 882 miles so far and oil service is showing 17350 miles and ad blue has dropped to 4225 miles already. I'll be keeping a close eye on the figures going forward!

Is just under 17,000 miles and 18 months still a little too early for the service due alert to show up?
