Quiz question - what is this thingy...?

Post by stephank » Thu May 17, 2018 7:28 pm

I'm looking for a clue as to what this gizmo might be...

IMG_4699.JPG

My car is a LHD and this is on the right side of the mirror.

I'm planning on adding a dash cam beneath this (F800 PRO with the body in the black area and the lens in the clear space) and want to avoid any issues with interfering tech too close together.

Several quick peeks through the ventilating openings didn't enlighten me...

Thanks in advance,
Stephan

Can't help with the box on the right side of the mirror as I'm awaiting delivery of my DS.
But a couple of observations about the F800 Pro. If you have an Infrared reflective windscreen it may affect the GPS connection time, here in the UK it can take up to 20 minutes before it connects. I don't have the optional aerial.
The other point, the F800 Pro lens only has up and down adjustment so I would advise not to mount it too far off centre of your windscreen otherwise you will not get full 140deg. road width coverage of the front of your car.
Oh, and I've added a polarising filter to help reduce dashboard reflection.
I'd also be interested to find out what that box is for.

I got a plain and totally boring windscreen. No heating and no anti-IR coating.
I've read about the positioning issues - I'll test with some removeable sticky tape for a good position first.
The polarising filter - now that's an interesting addition I'll have to look into. Thanks!

There’s a picture of the “thingy” without the cover on the windscreen thread ...

It's probably some kind of sensor...
...and they don't solve the riddle in the windscreen thread either.

It is the Humidity Sensor which is part of the climate control system. The bulk of that assembly to the left contains the Image Processing Module (IPM) for the forward facing cameras used for AEB and Lane Departure Warning etc.

Thanks!
Knowing what to search for helped a lot.
Found it in the workshop manual, 412-05.
I suppose placing the dash cam in vicinity the shouldn't be a problem then

I always thought that the humidity sensor was built into the rear view mirror? Has this changed recently? 😳
