Still waiting for reply from JLR UK on this issue. Called dealer today who said they had to send the recording of the sound to JLR Australia first and then it is sent to UK.

I am just wondering if any Australian members have had this issue and if engine replacement has been offered? As far as I can see the options are :
Replace balance shafts again
Replace engine
Replace car or refund

Car was purchased 20th December 2017 and balance shaft problem first reported early April, so within 6 months.

If the engine is replaced would that be evident to a prospective buyer if I sold?

Do they set the mileage back to zero on new engine?

Hi ds18,

My engine was replaced about 1yr ago due balance shaft bearing failure - more details towards the start of this thread.

An engine replacement is a modification. My dealer had to lodge paperwork with RMS (NSW) before handing the vehicle back. I'd be surprised if this doesn't show up on a carfacts history report when I go to sell it. The Odometer stays as is and the service intervals remain at the 24mth/34,000km (fantasy!) measured from first registration (i.e. engine change does not move claimed service intervals).

BTW, JLR Aust eventually offered me an extended warranty (5yrs total) when I started asking questions about impact on resale and service intervals.

I'll bear that in mind when I deal with their reply. I bought an extra 2 years warranty when I bought the car but will try for some other form of compensation.

just reading the posts here on this forum and I can tell you I've got the same problem with replacing the balance shaft. Just dropped my car off at the dealer where I bought it. They will change the balance shaft. I'm from Germany and my dealer hadn't had the problem since now, well that is what they told me.

3 weeks ago I had the car in because it told me to do a check up? Although it wasn't due yet. I bought this car in October 2017(LR DS built June 2017 SE 2.0 Diesel 179 PS) it it was a complete new car. May 2018 it started to make funny sounds (25.000 km) while accelerating and at around 1500 rpm the funny noise came up. Since I had to get it to the garage anyway because the car told me so, I told the garage staff (LR staff) about the sound, first they didn't know what it was so they called me that I can pick up the car. I asked them if the funny noise is gone, the denied it and told me that we have to make a new appointment, so I picked up the car I orderd them to do an oil changed, eventhough it was not necessary. Than they called me back to tell me that they have to change the blance shafts, they called LR UK and that it the outcome. I hope by changing the parts the car will be good to go but if I read all these posts I assume it'll be getting worse. I really like that car.

So should I also opt for a new engine because nobody knows what has been damaged so far?

Hi Brendan,
I'm not sure is it possible to show your contract that JLR offered extended warranty to 5yrs total after replace balance shaft.
I have same issue but JLR just want give me extended warranty (4yrs total).
It confuse how it could be no global SOP for this issue.

I mentioned in a previous post that our 6 mth old DS MY17 Ingenium engine was going to be replaced here in Australia, due to whistling sound. Indeed the engine was replaced in Jan 18 under warranty. We too received a 5 year warranty on new engine. But agree with others this may hurt resale value due to new 'blue slip' with NSW RMS.

Then in early Jun 18 a radiator hose disconnected while we were out driving, rendering the car un-driveable as coolant was emptied. Car was towed to LR service centre, where because the service centre was so busy, the car sat on the lot waiting for problem to be diagnosed. Then no spare parts in Aus, so had to wait for import. Was at service centre for almost a month before we got it back. JLR Customer Care were helpful but took some pushing to get some monetary compensation for inconvenience.

With these 2 events, the car had spent 25% of our 1st year of ownership at the service centre.

Now in Aug 18, car has developed a whooping or so called grinding noise. Took car to LR service centre - again very busy so cannot book car in for 2 weeks. LR mechanic concerned the car might need either components changed OR another engine replacement.

If car needs a second engine replacement we intend to pursue rejecting the vehicle & seeking compensation or seeking a replacement vehicle from JLR.

Is there precedent for this anywhere else?

You have pretty good consumer laws in Australia , so get in touch with them .
Don’t delay either m they can advise you on your rights.
