Incorrect service mileage reset?

Post by SailorDoc » Tue Apr 16, 2019 9:28 pm

Picked up my DS from its 21000 mile service today and N289 campaign. It was actually at 21200 miles, so after driving the 8 miles home I was expecting the service interval to show about 20800 miles, but it is showing 19850 miles. Should I complain to the dealer and demand they reset it properly, or is there something I’ve missed?

The first report of the 19,850 figure was in August 2017 but it has always been totally meaningless.

You now have a working service indicator (courtesy of N118) so even with N289 you stand little chance of reaching 19,850 miles before the oil has again got over half a litre of diesel (10%) mixed in with it. This will trigger the "Service required" message at a new average of 12,500 to 14,400 miles, still not great if you expected 21,000 miles, but significantly better than the old average achievable with a 6.1% dilution trigger.

It’s a MY 18 so I’ve always had a working service indicator! It had an interim oil change at 10500 miles so I know about oil dilution. However, it does not answer my question regarding why they have deleted 1000 miles immediately after the oil change. Are you saying that ALL cars are reset to 19850 after a service? I can’t find any official statement to that effect.

I think others have found it starts and stays on 19850 for a while, then starts decreasing after the 1150 miles or so. Don't think we ever found out why though.

Ah, I see see. How odd! Still, if it isn’t an error by the dealer that answers my question and I can ignore it. It’ll be in for another oil change within 6 months anyway!

Sorry about the sucking eggs info. What are your plans for the next oil service? One year or go with the Service message?

I’m currently doing about 19000 miles a year so suspect even with N289 applied it will call for a service before the year is up. If it doesn’t, I’ll get an oil change at 1 year as I don’t like the idea of oil going longer than that.
