Electric Jaguar XJ?!?

Post by Woolmeister » Fri Jul 05, 2019 10:40 am

WHY?

It's a right old barge of a car which probably makes up the lowest percentage of their volume sales today. I can understand the logic of possibly competing with the Tesla Model S but surely they would be better off creating an affordable electric Jaguar for the people, to complete with the likes of the Tesla Three? Then I might be interested.

Why are JLR so out of touch with their customers these days?

Hi Steve,

It doesn’t make much sense to me either but I suppose that they are thinking at least we can publish something positive for a change.

Isn't the iPace the cheaper affordable one?

The news as per usual have it wrong saying it's an electric 'version' of the XJ, it's a new model XJ meant to rival the bigger Teslas I guess. Given how many I see of those I see around here it's a market worth aiming at.

Today is the last day of production of the 'old' XJ, it's only selling a few hundred a year now. The new XJ will also form the basis of the 'Road Rover' (they'll probably change the name), an electric, road biased Range Rover (bit like Jag have gone to SUV, but the other way)

And given the cost of building an electric car, it's easier to sell an expensive car than a cheaper car. Years ago Ford said it didn't cost much more to build a Granada than a Fiesta (I think they ran down the same line). The extra cost for the 'expensive' car is better materials and the development cost amortised over fewer cars.

Final thought - it does worry me when the news feature something you know something about, and they get it wrong. Exactly what else are they getting wrong?

They’re discussing this topic and “range anxiety” on radio 4 right now... Makes a change from “range rover anxiety”...

Watch the financials. This looks like just another carefully-timed diversion.

There are a number of great things about an electric car. One being if you have a home charger then you always have a full battery. Another is the instant torque.
