Private number plates

Post by BB1 » Thu Nov 08, 2018 7:04 pm

Hi all!
I've just transferred private plates online through dvla. This is new to me and I'm wondering what happens to the original registration? Do I have to register to retain it, or is it held against the car automatically?
Thanks in advance 👍🏻

Held against the car automatically, so if you sell the vehicle and remove the cherished plate, £80 retention fee, the original number goes back to what it was - in 99% of cases. You don’t have to do anything, it’s all down to the DVLA.

Ah great, was hoping it'd be like that (less the £80 tho 🙄)
Thankyou 👍🏻

I purchased one for the eldest last month via the DVLA. I got the V750 from them within days. He fancied one with an X Prefix, that put it up another £250, apparently it’s the prefix of choice.

Bought mine direct from DVLA too, the same plate was available from other sellers at a higher price.
I remember in the late 80's I was working next to number plate dealer, he had an old Austin a35 in his carpark with the plate MY F40. The Ferrari F40 was an icon then and I can't imagine what he fetched for that plate. My prefix with one number (look like my initials) and 3 letter abbreviation of my surname was only £400 inc fees.

Any idea how long it takes from dvla approval to the insurance database being updated. I'm trying to start a new policy having been on a temporary one on this car. It's currently off road for a few days so not critical- apart from theft!

I thought it was pretty instant, if for nothing else for you to pay them cat tax.

They've sent me notification that it's done, however it's not showing yet on their reg check, nor on insurance plate search.

I’ve had that. There seems to be a slight lag on it being presented on AskMid, but on the DVLA it’s there.
