Tip for finding rattles

Post by nino » Mon Dec 03, 2018 10:41 pm

Our new Disco Sport had a really annoying rattle which sounded like it was in the dash.

I downloaded a tone generator from the app store and played it through the speakers in the car.

It was just a case of finding the right frequency and the rattle showed itself, and as the car was stationary it was easy to find.

Awesome! I shall try this

Any tips for finding the source of noises that seem to be loose items in the rear?

Try taking the luggage cover out, that had rattles fixed by adhesive felt from the rattle kit.

From 2019 JLR will be offering this software pre-loaded as part of the "Anti-Rattle Pack". Once the source of any rattle has been identified, owners will simply apply their own hi-tech fix. "Fast, Cheap and Cheerful."

You have omitted to note that the final design will include the coveted "Land Rover" logo, which will of course add massively to the retail price.

Once the rattle has been found, your dealer will sell these at a price that will make you balk.

Excellent! I couldn’t find a good app that was easy to use and precise (only tried two) but found this site that allows preços control. http://www.szynalski.com/tone-generator/

I found that the passenger side seat memory buttons peak their rattle at around 55 and 89Hz. Anyone have ideas on how to reduce without taking it all apart?

Haven’t looked for the noise in the rear, as it’s cold these days in NY.

One word of caution about feeding tone generators into your cars audio system. I blew a couple of expensive Naim tweeters using a test disk which had tones in the supersonic frequency range that I accidentally played at high volume. So keep the frequency below 10KHz and only use just enough volume to do the job. Its also possible that speaker voice coils can overheat if run continuously at fixed frequency so don't just leave them running for minutes at a time.
