Well towing our 1300kg caravan down through France, I don't feel that our Discovery Sport HSE tows as well as our 63 plate Freelander 2 did!
May just be me or the tyres, which are set for the proper towing pressures!
Any comments?
Recently towed caravan 100 miles or so with the DS and it was a dream. 1360kg van with noseweight about 80kg and it was very steady. Tyre pressures left at normal as weight on car with only driver and passenger is less than a back seat passenger.
I cannot compare with a freelander I'm afraid, but I was very happy.
We have been towing our 1500kg Caravan to France for the 4th time this spring. After 12 years towing with a XC90.
The DS behaved excellent. But this year was the first time we noticed the heavy crosswinds. (Very heavy, more than usual).
So it might just have been the weather. Our DS manages the Caravan just as the XC90 did, even though being much lighter.
A very very good towing car. And even a smoother ride, due to the noseweight. ;-)
Reckon it must be something with your caravan. Three DS's have re-affirmed to me that it is the best towcar we have ever owned (apart from a Merc ML 320CDI - but that was to do with having a big V6 diesel under the bonnet).
We tow an 1800kg single axle Hobby caravan with 100kg noseweight and load distributed as per all recommended guidance (much to my wife's annoyance as she is in the chuck it in camp!) We always travel at 100kph/60mph on motorways but have tried at upto 110kph and rock steady.
TP of car set to Max load (2.5 and 2,9 bar f/r). Immensely stable and very steady (even when having to do emergency stop (as tested by some ****er last weekend cutting me up) and emergency lane changes.
Pulling Bailey Unicorn Seville all round the Outer Hebrides and I have to say DS pulls it like a dream, especially good for the occasional bit of Wild camping off piste, when we can't get booked in to a site.
I"ve towed a four wheel car transporter ( with smaller car on ) many miles and had great stability / comfort. Unless the towing vehicle itself is heavily loaded there is no reason to increase the tyre pressures, As stated (above somewhere) the extra nose weight on the tow bar is the only addition to the tow vehicle to be considered. Only issue I have is that its a bit high geared to maintain 60 mph on the motorway and use highest gear((9th), but the solution to that is "obvious".
I tow 1600kg of Adria behind mine and it copes admirably. However, I find that getting the nose weight under 100kg is very important to reduce the 'bounce'.
