Extended warranty worth it?

Post by Potatoe Farmer » Mon Mar 12, 2018 10:32 am

Had my Disco Sport since new, not had a single issue whatsoever! Very pleased with it indeed!
Not been back to this forum as busy with life and work, and family, and not had any car niggles.

Only two super minor niggles...

1: I think the sensors for flat tires are a bit oversensitive, every few months I have to top the wheels pressures up to remove the warning light. The wheels seem fine to me. although we do drive where there are lots of farley rough roads, potholes etc.

2: Again minor. But I think the navigation system is very basic. I have been used to google maps for driving with my phone mounted as a sat nav on my work vehicle, and the LR one just seems so old-fashioned. It particularly annoys me that whilst you can have River names etc show up, and point of interest, I haven't been able to get it show up small towns and villages, which means its hard to place where you are on the map in rural areas. In that senario i take out my phone. Possibly me missing a settings option? I checked the Full SIze Discovery wondering is it a different system and it seems the same. Such a pitty you can't you android auto etc on the future vehicles, when its available to use on the dash screen on so many rivals... alongside APples one etc.

Anyhow, reason i posted,,,

My warranty will expire on 21/04/2018.

Protect your Discovery Sport for 12 months from £57.00* per month (10 payments).

Your Land Rover warranty includes:

• Warranty protection tailor made by Land Rover
• MOT insurance included
• Your choice of Land Rover retailer for repairs
• Optional Land Rover assistance

Your warranty cannot be extended after your warranty expiry date.

Car is paid off in full. I am planning on keeping the car for at least another year plus, currently buying a new home, and cant afford a new car also...
Is the Extended Warranty recommended? I know you can pass it on to private buyers, but not dealers etc, whihc is fine and i assume will asssit with resale etc.
I'm not really into cars so though I would ask you knowledgeable bunch!

Thanks again! :D :ugeek:

3: Another very minor niggle, and obvious that i don't know much/am not really into cars... the heating is is fine, but I always seem to have really cold feet in general, (I'm only 35) so i love to turn up the heat blowers down at your feet. The output in the DS is extremely poor/barely noticeable. I love driving my 8 year old Vauxhall Viro van, as i can have toasty hot feet, and actually feel the hot air from the blowers on them...

I think that the very mention of the word "tailor made" would set alarm bells ringing with me....it would indicate that they are fully aware of major component(s) failure potential, and have "tailor made" the warranty to exclude it. Just like the poor sods that got caught out with it under Discovery 4 ownership!

The cost isn’t OTT, but the LR extended warranty isn’t LR, it’s a firm whom operates under the LR banner and like most warranties, there will be exceptions which Sod’s law, anything you claim for won’t be covered.

If you’ve had no problems to date, I’d take a chance and not get the warranty. If I’d had problems, perhaps a different matter particularly if I was saving up for something. It’s a case of hung if you do, hung if you don’t.

I did think the AA car breakdown insurance was worth a look. It’s got limitations, but would take the sting out of it for you plus you could have the recovery aspect. Think it was £160 odd and if you claim only a £35 excess, although this has probably changed since I looked at it.

As Highlander. My Freelander factory warranty expired October 2015 and I never bothered to renew it. Given that aside from a split intercooler hose (£132 fitted) and a sticking turbo actuator arm (£260 fitted) my outlay for faults in 5 1/2 years has been circa £400, whereas had I taken the Warranty and carried on with it I would be approaching the £2100 mark by this October. Horses for courses I suppose
