How is the DS at towing a caravan?

Post by Mamil » Wed Jul 26, 2017 12:57 pm

Yes, sadly that time of my life has come where I'm considering buying a caravan :D

I bought the DS with this in mind, hoping it was a capable 'tug', but have struggled to find an off-road caravan that can cope with our challenging outback roads but is within the capabilities of the DS to tow. Most outback caravans over here are two and a half tonne behemoths with dual axles and a nose weight over 200kgs!

However I think I've now found a suitable candidate, so I'm seeking experiences from owners who've towed similarly sized vans as to how the DS performs on road (I'll find out about the off-road bit in due course).

My DS is the smaller 150hp engine and auto gearbox. In Australia this is rated pull up to 2200kgs with ball weight up to 175kg

The caravan I'm thinking of getting is:-

Single axle
Length: 4.99m
Height: 2.6m
Towball weight: 130kg
Tare weight: 1620kg
ATM: 2000kg

And here's what it looks like if you're interested (sorry about the Jeep  )

Any thoughts from you experienced caravanners out there welcomed....

Hi Mamil and don't worry about the J!!p.

We tow a "conventional" caravan which has a maximum loaded weight of 1700kg is 703cm long, 232 wide and 263 high. It's on an Al-KO chassis as most are and if fitted with the AL-KO ATC system.

We also have the 150HP version with Auto box and the DS is an absolutely excellent towing vehicle (at least that's good about it ;)

As far as I can recall a lot of other members have also reported positively on this but most will presuambly have the 180HP engine.

Incidentally I don't find it sad at all and kno w a lot of "younger" couples who love caravanning :)

My 150 DS tows my 1500kg caravan without any issues.

On a side note, I also use it to tow my vintage tractor to ploughing matches. This is 1900kg, with a nose weight of 95kg.

Handles the mud ok, but not really tested it yet!

Some particularly nasty people might ask which is the tractor but I do like the colour harmonisation ;)

Yes, that's the best feature of the DS. It is indeed a very very good towing vehicle. I've got the 150hp engine with auto gearbox and it's great.
Just keep in mind that you are towing. You might forget! The suspension loves it too. The ride is more comfortable and less bumpy than solo!
Even starting up a steep hill is easy due to the 9speed gearbox. There is a lot to complain about this vehicle, but towing is really good!
Oh, almost forgot: The caravan is swedish made 'Polar', similar size the Chippys' but a bit lighter, about 1500kg.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's reassuring that you've only good things to say about the DS's towing abilities. Mine would be a bit closer to the weight limit than yours, and my proposed caravan has the aero-dynamics of a brick, so my experiences may not be as good, but I may get the opportunity of a test drive as my local dealer has a demo model in stock.

Simon - yes I'm hoping the caravan is a good match for the DS off-road capabilities, although we expect to ease ourselves into it gently by visiting national parks for the next couple of years, but by the time the kids grow up and leave home the plan is to do some longer outback adventures, and maybe if we like it a 'grand tour' of Oz in our retirement!

That was the first thing the wife said. Why is the DS in Fergie grey!

Anyone towed two tonnes for a long distance? That's what the caravan would weigh fully loaded so I'd be interested if anyone has done this and can share their experiences? Thanks.

You may wish to consider having your DS weighed. This will give an idea of the weight ratio. LR give various kerb masses for different configurations of vehicle but our DS was well above these, which is good for the towing mass ratio. The kerb mass of our DS is 2080kg, which is a big advantage when trying to stay within the (UK) recommend mass towing ratio of 85%. This also gives us more flexibility if we want to tow up to 100%!
