Hill assist braking

Post by Moodymike » Sat Apr 13, 2019 9:25 am

How sensitive is the hill brake assist? I have a DS SE tech diesel with manual gearbox. On very slight slopes the assist braking does not operate whereas on steep slopes no problem, the brakes holding for several seconds. My DS is only two weeks since delivery is this normal?

Just a thought, but maybe it’s calibrated for automatics where the torque converter drag will hold it on a slight incline. Therefore the Hill Hold only kicks in on steeper inclines where the auto would roll back too. Saves LR having to install and manage two different software calibrations for the system.

I guess it depends on the steepness of the inclines you are experiencing it on.

The slopes are the kind that one would quickly move foot to accelerator with a possible slight movement backwards, not advisable when traffic behind .

I think I read somewhere that hill brake assist activates when the slope is 15 degrees or greater and holds for about 2 seconds

It’s called GRADIENT RELEASE CONTROL (GRC).

The Gradient Release Control (GRC) system operates when the vehicle is pulling away from a standstill on an incline or a decline. When the vehicle's brakes are released, the GRC system automatically delays and graduates the brake release to allow the vehicle to pull away smoothly.

The GRC system automatically operates in forward and reverse gears. No driver intervention is required.

If the brakes are applied with the Hill Descent Control (HDC) system enabled, the GRC system activates to allow a smooth transition into HDC operation.

The GRC system does not operate if the terrain response sand driving program is enabled. See SAND.

Thanks for that explanation. Doesn’t answer my original question as to why my system does not kick in on a slight gradient.

When you say it doesn’t work, does the car roll back? As GRC only holds the car for a few seconds while you move your foot from brake to accelerator. It doesn’t hold the car permanently.

Sorry should have been more precise, the vehicle rolls back. When on steeper slope holds for a few seconds.

It only works when pulling away from a standstill so maybe you were rolling forward before going back?

MoodyMike Hi,
If you sit with your foot on footbrake, it should hold on any slope while you quickly release the clutch and accelerate away. Not sure about a Manual when using EPB. Does the EPB release when you set off from rest?? If so it should hold on a slope until you release the clutch.
