Incoming Mobile Phone Calls Not Ringing

Post by aingarth » Sat Feb 16, 2019 5:37 pm

I took delivery of a Discovery Sport Landmark edition at the end of November. My I-Phone (I-Phone 6) paired and worked fine until I registered for In Control. Since then, incoming calls ring the phone and show on the screen but the car ringing tone does not activate. In fact, what is happening is that the car audio system is playing the phone ring tone but very quietly. The technician at the main dealer has looked at it and has never seen the problem before. He paired his Android phone and that rang correctly. I have now paired my wife's phone (I-Phone 7) and that is just the same.
The main dealer is not getting back to me and LR Customer Service are unable to help beyond asking me to check the phone compatibility list.

Has anyone experienced this problem or does anyone have a solution?

I suggest 5 things in order:

1. Ensure the iPhone is at the latest iOS.

2. Delete the Bluetooth pairing on both the phone and the car, and re-pair.

3. Ensure the volume is turned up (car and phone) and that you have “show notifications” enabled on the IPhone Bluetooth settings for your car’s pairing preferences.

4. Ensure the iPhone isn’t set to not ring (do not disturb etc.).

5. Ensure the InControl Touch system is at the latest version (v3.4). As you are experiencing issues then you can get the Dealer to upgrade under warranty. Would also be interesting to see what version you have anyway!

Get someone to call you and as it’s ringing, hit the volume up button several times?

Thanks for the suggestions.
In response to the first reply:-
1 Both I-phones are at the latest IOS 12.1.4
2 I have unpaired and re-paired several times
3 Settings are as you suggest
4 Both phones set to ring
5 Upgrading the software - waiting for some sort of response from the dealer - they have had the issue for 6 weeks now. I chase them weekly.

In response to the 2nd reply
The volume in car for ringing is set at the maximum. But as I said, the car created ringing tone doesn't happen, what you hear is the ringing tune on the phone replicated on the car speakers, but even on max volume, very quietly. If you change tunes on the phone this doesn't solve it and if you choose a ring tone like "old telephone", it doesn't come through the car speakers at all.

Both phones worked perfectly well with the previous Freelander. When the car was delivered on 29th November 2018, it worked correctly but stopped either because I logged the car into In Control or at whatever IOS update happened at the end of 2018.The hands free on the Discovery works fine when you answer the call or make a call. It is just that, at speed, you need to have the phone in a prominent position so you can hear the ringing tone from the phone itself or keep looking at the screen. The senior electrical technician at the dealers, who is the lead on software and ICE has been there 30 years, he had never seen the problem before and immediately paired his android phone which worked correctly. He couldn't find a setting on either phone or car to solve it. He said that more than half the LR customers used I-phones.

I will push the dealer for a software upgrade - my car only came out of the factory on 23rd November 2018 - it was a special order as I required the spare wheel with the modified back exhaust system. Has there been an upgrade to version 3.4 since then?

This is interesting as I had an incoming call last week and only noticed the message on the screen - there was no ringing noise. I used another phone to phone myself and turned the volume up to max - the notification in the car is still quite low. Needless to say, I have an iPhone running the latest version of software. Is this something I should take up with the dealer?

Mine has done this a few times over the last couple of days. Odd.

It turns out that my issue is not unique and affects a number of new LR cars including the Velar. However, LR HQ refuse to accept the issue. My main dealer has now booked the car in for all next week with a courtesy car and will be updating the software to the latest version and taking videos of how the car is dealing with phone calls and sending to LR HQ. My own phone, now an I-phone 8, does play the ring tone through the main speakers, but not very loud even on full volume. My wife's phone, an I-phone 7 which has the old fashioned telephone bell ringing tone, does not sound at all in the car, just on the phone. However, once answered, both phones perform normally.

I will send an update after the car has been with the main dealer next week.

Interim update from the dealer is that the very latest LR software is actually around 12 months behind IOS software updates. So it is currently designed to work with IOS 11.3 released in March 2018. It appears to have something which is incompatible with IOS 12.1.1 which was released on 5th December 2018 and which is included in IOS 12.2 which is the current version.

So if you have started getting the same problem, it is because you may have recently updated your phone software.

It affects a range of LR cars - I will post an update when I have one - the car is still at the dealer.
