Bluetooth issues with Google Pixel (2, 2XL, 3, and 3XL)

Post by Kross » Sun Jan 06, 2019 9:31 pm

Hello,

My wife's 2018 Disco Sport (details in my signature) has been having Bluetooth connectivity issues with both of our phones ever since we bought it, mid-2018. We both have Google Pixel phones. Last year we had the Pixel 2 and 2XL. Currently, we have the Google Pixel 3 and 3XL. Identical Bluetooth issues exist with both.

The issue:
-- Phone pairs just fine and is connected.
-- When you are on a call or streaming BT audio (and even if you're not), every 30-60 seconds the connection disconnects randomly.
-- So much so that the Bluetooth option itself (in the car's settings) becomes unchecked (phone just shows as nothing connected on BT) and then reappears after 4-8 seconds, at which point the car reconnects to the phone.
-- This happens continuously on my phone and my wife's.
-- We have tried everything, from factory resetting the car to our phones to getting any available software updates from the dealership. Nothing has helped.

I have a 2016 Tesla Model-S and both our phones work flawlessly with it over Bluetooth. My wife came to the Disco Sport from a 2015 Nissan Rogue and both our phones had worked flawlessly with that vehicle as well.

We've taken the vehicle in to our local LR/Jaguar dealership. This last time, they appeared to have done multiple software upgrades. The ironic thing is, that they gave us a Jaguar XE loaner that our phones ALSO had Bluetooth issues with (in the same exact way!). So clearly this is an issue with the Google Pixel phones and the Landrover/Jaguar infotainment system itself (and not just our vehicle specifically).

By the way, even after the software upgrades the dealership did, our phones continue to have the very same Bluetooth issues still.

Anyone else having these issues? Have you found a solution or a workaround yet?

After scouring the internet, it appears this is most probably a Google issue. More specifically a Google Pixel issue, when on the newer version of Android.

Some folks have had some success with the following setting changes:
  • On Google Pixel 2 (or newer) go to settings -> System ->About Phone
  • Tap on Build Number seven times. (should activate Developer Mode)
  • Go back to System then to Developer Options.
  • Under Bluetooth AVRCP version, select version 1.6.
  • Exit settings.
  • Test phone with car.
Will try this whenever I get home.

I have an other issue.

Playing Audio over Bluetooth with an Galaxy A5 and/or S8 with Android 8 does not work correctly.

Steps: Pair Device
Choose Media BLuetooth.
Only 1 Track found is displayed, but it is no real Audio. So not playable.
Searching for Playlist does not work. Nothing found.

Workaround is, to start the Music Player App, Choose a playlist and start a song.

Then the Radio sync the playlist and you can browse also using the radio.
But it is very very slow.

And also i got disconncections during playback sometimes.

Phonecalls are working normaly.

I'm now back to good old USB Stick :).

I managed to fix this issue by installing an app called Bluetooth Phonebook from the app store. I have a Pixel 2 and a DiscoSport 16 plate.

Hope it helps )

for my S10 "dropping" connection this was the only solution which works.

I did the following:

1. Bluetooth advanced settings, dual audio on (volume and ringtone sync off).

2. Developer settings, changed PBAP version to 1.1 and turned multiple PBAP properties off.

3. Unpair car from phone, and remove phone from car.

4. Initiate a new pairing with the phone, and when asked I allowed only contact sync, not messages sync.

No problems since, both phone and music connected.

Same here. Backed out all the intricate bluetooth changes on Phone, repaired multiple times with the car and the connection has been flawless. Once App is installed, it just works finally (TM)

Just want to say thanks for information about Bluetooth Phonebook App, it has solved all my connection problems that I have had for 2 years. Finally I can use my Pixel 2XL phone in car correctly.

Thank you so much for posting this info. I just switched to a Pixel 3a and had the dreaded Bluetooth dropout. Bluetooth Phonebook solved it instantly. I would never have come across this solution without your info so thanks again.

Sorry to raise again but the Bluetooth Phone book app has stopped working under Android 11. It just crashes out.

Any other solutions for Pixel phones?
