Phase 4 ICTP - Android Auto, larger display

Post by roydonaldson » Tue Dec 04, 2018 11:11 am

Hi there,

Once you have Phase 4, 18C and the SmartPhone pack enabled on the ICTP system, you can now connect up your Android phone to the car and run the Android Auto app. When you first connect this up, you may find that it only takes up about half of the size of the screen that you are used to. This can be improved for it to take up about 3/4 of the display and it is a lot better.

To do this, you need to enable 720p output from Android Auto on your phone:

"To get Developer mode open Android Auto on your phone while it's not connected to the car, go to the 'About' section of the menu and tap the 'Android Auto' title on that page 10 times. You should then get an additional menu at the top right, including 720p and 1080p, and manual control for night and day mode."

I've turned on 720p and it makes a massive difference to the size of Android Auto on the screen.

I did that after you said on the other thread.

Still not ideal, it should fill the screen and the graphics aren't great.

Anyone's Android Auto actually filling the whole of the 10" screen?

The graphics are completely down to Android not LR or InControl. Apple CarPlay looks much better in comparison - mimics the iPhone springboard very well. I guess Apple spent more time on making it look better plus they are not having to account for the huge variety of Android handsets and different aspect ratios and screen resolutions?

Even CarPlay doesn't fill the whole screen horizontally, there are small borders. This I assume is down to the screens aspect ratio or perhaps a safety area to help account for different car screen sizes? Again I assume Google play it safe and add a lot of 'padding' around the edges.

It's not a major problem, I only use Android Auto for accessing the Mediamonkey app on my phone so that the car's infortainment shows the correct artist info and artwork.
