Hope the above helps someone else coming at this for the first time with a windows10 system.

.
Thank you tangey, nice to see others with problems. I contacted microsoft and I had a tech take over my computer and with windows 10 Pro it would not him to access either the SD card formatted in my camera nor the Land Rover SD card. Sd cards formatted by windows worked fine as did all flash drives.

Ironically I can read the Land Rover Card and my camera card but windows marks it as "read only" So naturally when I try to update the maps the software does not see the SD card.

I may try to update the map on my grand kids windows 10 standard laptop or their old windows 8.

I had contacted the 3 local dealers (next closest is 400KM away) and 2 of them said the car did not have a sd card and the third after several days got back to me saying they could sell me an original sd card to try to update. UGGG

Sticking in a new USB drive, it says it has to be formatted to FAT32 and asks you if you want to do it, but when you click yes, it just falls over. No problem, just right click on the USB stick and format it yourself....except windows 10 no longer supports formatting to FAT32, only exFat or NTFS.
I have four installations of windows 10 here. One was from the free upgrade on a Windows 8 laptop, one is on a microsoft surface and two are new fresh installs. All are 64 bit and up to date as at last thursday's biweekly update.
All four support Fat32 and as can be seen from the screenshot it is the default file system for devices of 32GB and less:

I use this PC to format two 32GB cards every day and have never had a problem with that.

Yes they will on drives 32GB or lower. It's drives above that , eg 64GB, where you need to use a 3rd party program to format to FAT32

Try a 64gb (which is what I needed to use on the last update) with those 4 win10 installations and let me know how you get on.

To date I have not had to use a 64GB for the maps (Russia and Europe). Updated yesterday and Here suggests it is about 33GB. Proceed to next screen and it says to ensure that there is at least 29.8GB free. Downloaded maps onto the same Samsung 32GB device I have been using for the past year without a problem (took 50 minutes but that's in Norway with terrible 'broadband'). From there into the car and all is well.

I assume there must be more than one type of SD card needed, depending on which Entertainment system you have.

I note that several people talking about needing a 32GB or 64GB card are HSE models, which have a different standard Entertainment systems than SE-TECH and SE models.

I mention this as my last SatNav update only contains 7.3GB of data (Europe & Russia). So even a 32GB SD card is way more than is needed.

Unless of course there has been a quadrupling of data needed for SE-TECH systems!

On HSE's you now need a 64GB usb drive due to the size of the update. Alas JLR still haven't implimented differential updates which would speed up the entire process no end!
