Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction

Post by Woolmeister » Thu Aug 31, 2017 9:46 am

Another week, and another fault with the DS.

On my way into work this morning I'm greeted with:

"No Engine Restarts in 540 miles. Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction."

Pressed the LRA button in the roof console and the operator was very helpful, to be fair. She was originally going to send the AA out to me but then decided she needed to send a LR Technician out to me. Should be with me by 5pm today.

Worst. Car. Ever.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction

Post by matrix2020 » Thu Aug 31, 2017 1:34 pm

Hi, we were in the South of France last week (Alps) when I got the Engine warning light come ..... 5 Mins later the following:

'No Engine Restart in 540 miles. Diesel Exhaust Fluid Dosing Malfunction'.

No problem except I was 600 or so miles from the Euro-tunnel so no way could I get home.

having phoned the LR assist they sent an AA man out the next morning (to the Lodge we were staying) and after 4 hours of LR software resets and updates he had it cracked and all has been week for the journey home.

What came out of it hough was that Jaguar/LR send 10 dedicated specialists to France for Jul and Aug in the guise of AA, they have Jag/LR laptops with dedicated software for our cars that they take back to England when the summer is over. Sadly the number of breakdowns over the summer make it more cost effective to have them live in France for 2 months than use the dealer network that would not have looked at my car in time for me to get home. While the guy that fixed mine (usually works in London) was great it was worrying that they have sufficient breakdowns to warrant the expense, or worse the network is so bad they wont respond to breakdowns.
Apparently 80% of the breakdowns are as a result, or because of, AdBlue issues/customer ignorance. Most are fixed by software or re-filling. Mine took 15 software resets and a 3 full software uploads to clear the warnings.
Disappointingly the software appears to be very flaky (Ford primarily) and does not load cleanly but..... he did do two software upgrades the car needed that had not been done the week before when it had its first service in the UK... yes it failed 1 week after the dealer service!! Since then it has given about an 8 - 10 MPG improvement!! 8-)
While I am now nervous to keep the car beyond its warranty it just goes to highlight the issues of modern cars and software, the cost of ownership after the warranty runs out will be exponential.

Has anyone else had a breakdown in France this Summer or had the same warning mine had?

As I type this, the LRA Tech is under my car soldering some new wires onto the adblue injector. They had snapped, apparently.

Mine had been 'played with' (routed wrongly past the heat deflector) which must have been during its only service the week before, but had not been damaged. Interestingly my Tech said you can not solder the cables because it will affect the resistance and the data flow will record an error, it has to be 'clamp' type connected!!

Just shows you cant get a straight answer from anyone!!

Thanks, Barnsh. Was going to suggest you merge the topics.

My Adblue injector cables were soldered today; I saw the gas-powered soldering iron in use. It behaved OK on the way home today but we will see how it fares over the next few weeks.

Interestingly, the LRA Tech said that he also attempted to update the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) but was unable to do so due to a "glitch with the software in the Heating and Ventilation Control Module". Which makes me wonder just how the dealership managed to update the PCM last time it was in the dealers.

So there's another thing for them to attempt to fix when it eventually goes in to the dealership on 18th September, by which time, the car will be approximately 2,000 miles overdue for the oil change service it needs all because my LR dealer can't fit me in before then.
