To buy or not to buy - 2019 2.0 TD4

I had a 2008 Freelander 2 with the 2.2 engine. I did over 185,000 miles on that engine with the only engine related problem being the easily replaced intake motorised throttle. By that time she really did need a gearbox overhaul but as she had towed for much of her life I will forgive her that. You have to remember that the 2008 version was Euro 4 so no DPF, no adblue, and the lower powered (160bhp) TD4 version.
Point being you are not comparing apples with apples, yes the old FL2 on Euro 4 is capable of stellar mileages (I know of one that has done 280k), but the DS version has emissions equipment that the older version just doesn't have.
That said I had a 2016 D180, put over 60,000 miles on her in just over two years, yes in the beginning there was software issues that meant 3 callouts for LR assist because of Adblue problems, sorted within the first 6 months and faultless after that, apart from a DPF heatshield coming adrift I can't remember any other issues - nice car, but I never did like grey as a colour. She had oil changes every 10,000 miles and every D180 owner should do the same as she would put fuel in the oil when regenerating the DPF.

Currently have a late 2018 D240 again Ingenium engine but oh so different to the D180 in just over two years and 50,000miles of ownership she has had:
Balance shafts replaced
Water pump replaced.
Camshaft variable timing solenoid replaced.
RH front drive shaft bearing and housing replaced.
None of the above stopped me from using the car, LR came clean on all four faults and just got on with the repairs.
Granted the D240 doesn't put fuel in the oil, or if she does she uses oil at the same rate that it is being diluted, but she still gets an oil change every 10k.

Go on the FL2 forums and you will hear horror stories of swirl flaps being ingested and wrecking engines, of fuel pump drives shearing and destroying the camshaft, of differentials collapsing - for every sad failure there are a thousand owners that don't post as they have nothing to report. I imagine the same is true here.

If you can get the proper LR warranty on the 2019 version AND she has LR service history definitely go for it. But and here's the real but, if you are going to use the car for only short journeys avoid any Euro 6 diesel from any manufacturer. Mine does 2 x 40 mile fast journeys every weekday and often a lot further at weekends so a Euro 6 diesel is suited to "my driving style" (in joke)
