44mpg 180 manual , never been in eco in its life.long trips
Short ones 20 mpg at times.

As for 60 miles at the weekend , logically this sounds good , but what trips does in do Monday to Friday ?
We did come to the conclusion on here that you could do the 60 miles and leave it either mid regeneration or wanting a regeneration the very next start up.
It regenerates when full , or every 250 miles if one hasn't completed. Sadly all our shouts for a light to tell us it's currently regenerating has fell on deaf ears at JLR.

You just don't know when it needs one , so you need to be prepared to be able to give it s long blast when it needs it, a couple of folk have gotten caught out with this by doing short trips during the week .

Factor in your fuel loss running the diesel to clean the DPF too :D

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Interesting to see low to mid 30s for diesel is probably the realistic mpg achievable for my kind of journeys, (was expecting high 30, maybe sneaking 40), which would probably push me towards petrol and risking the financial hit, should I end up reverting to higher mileage, especially if i could expect mid 20's from the petrol

Did a quick excel with JLRs published figures, which are obviously in dreamland, but came out as about 40% more in fuel costs per mile for petrol. Not major over 6k a year, but becomes expensive mistake at 10+K per year.

Any bad side to the petrol engines, other than the lower MPG?
None , perfect, quiet just as good at climbing hills if not better , I'm getting 36 mpg but that's in the fpace, take a look at the petrol thread no complaints over there.

Better mpg on short trips , for not much loss on long trips , bigger tank too .no DEF no DEF problems , no DPF problems ,no EGR problems .

Unless your towing a caravan regularly I'd stick to a petrol DS , take one for a drive back to back with the 180 diesel.

Have you thought about looking at the new Jaguar Sport back

You get all the 4x4 toys and a bit of luxury, plenty of room . Jag are doing some good deals and you might get a good price with them on the DS too.

Mpg will be better on the same ingenium engine , plus they don't have the dreaded DPF fault.
Or if you like the ride height the FPace , again no DPF or b pillar faults.

Thanks, The XF Sportbrake is a nice car. But - does it have the same god awful sat nav as the DS? Probably.

I'm happy enough with the ingenious engine though, just need it to doe better MPG which on a non SUV car it probably should.

Why do the other JLR cars not have the DPF issue? I'd have thought they use exactly the same tech.
They don't have the same DPF issues because they use a different emmisions system , plus the engine is mounted in line giving greater natural heat to the DPF . It's a different layout therefor less excess fuel ( post injection) is needed to reach burning temp for the DPF. (SCRF) .
The vehicles with issues have transverse mounted engines due to lack of space in the Engine compartment. This also leads to the poor service interval seen in JLRP 00100 pdf release by JLR. JLR like to blame driving style but it's just poor design, proven by those vehicles without this issue using the same engine.

The god awful sat nav is fixed with the latest ICTP updates there's a couple of pages on here about 17c update which sorted 90% of sat nav issues and brought voice control to it. The latest version phase 4 ( also called 18b) improves the response of the unit even further.

Interestingly I'm now getting 34mog ( measured by fuely) on the 25t petrol fpace . The trip meter on the car regularly shows 37/38 mpg. So changing to the petrol has gotten rid of poor service interval from the DS ingenium , all the DPF /EGR related gunk issues too. And there is no turbo lag at all.

SimonH on here changed to the 180 D5 , he has no early service or DPF issues the cars to avoid are those listed in the JLR document JLRP 00100..
