I fell foul buying an early MY16 DS and was subject to loads of trips back to main dealer, the car was good when trouble free so I stuck with it (with xtended warranty for 18 months). Replaced car with Mk. 2 in March 2020 and a huge improvement on early car.
So it's down to the old chestnut of underdeveloped cars and how you really need to wait for a a few years before buying a new model (from JLR) once they are sorted, they are very good: case in point, P300e

Similar issue here, bought a 2016 and had no end of trouble for the first 6-9 months with software / firmware - eventually settled down to be a really nice reliable drive. So once it became reliable I swapped it for a MY19 (late 2018) 240 diesel, think about it, new pathfinder control system but on the old chassis, active-driveline rather than Haldex, and D240 rather than the far more popular D180. So sod all support (too few to make it worth while), never going to get Second hand parts at the breakers, and no LR specialist is going to know anything about the transmission.
There's a phrase for people that do that - - mug, masochist, fool, or "early adopter"

Good luck with the P300e Guys - sure in the end it will become the new normal and all the niggles will seem like a minor snag along the way.

Your experience does sound very similar to ours. The timing of the fault appearing in July is similar also. When I originally spoke to our dealer, they said there had been a communication from JLR along the lines of a software upgrade was causing issues similar to this. They told me I need to bring the car in and they would do a full software re-set and re-configure. However, when I took the car in they identified a fault with the high voltage coolant heater. It sounded as though ours wasn't the first car with the same problem. Incidentally, we've also had the car since January and it performed very well for the first 6 months.

Either there is a software issue causing some of these problems or there was a batch of fault coolant heaters used by the factory when our cars were made!

I find you can get the car to stay in EV mode but you have to have the climate system turned completely off. That means going into the climate 'App' on Pivi Pro and pressing the power symbol towards the top right of the screen. The temperature dials will then go completely blank. If you press the start-stop button without putting your foot on the brake you can turn the climate off and select EV mode, then press Start-Stop with your foot on the brake and you should find the car will drive in EV mode.

Could be worth giving this a try?

I can confirm that the turn climate off workaround works for me and allows the car to stay in EV mode.

Has anyone else received this new build yet? I am still on 2.1.3e as of 18th September.

I finally made contact with my dealer's hybrid specialist to whom I explained the problem in detail.

He asked two questions:

1) Did I have enough fuel because the car won't run in EV if there isn't enough. I explained I have never been below 50%

2) Is the car in EV, Hybrid or Save mode. I explained again that from January through July 10 the car managed a daily commute of 14 miles without the ICE starting and that it didn't matter if the car was in EV or Hybrid. Now it can very rarely be switched to EV mode and in Hybrid the ICE is running almost all the time. I didn't complicate matters by explaining the 'climate off' workaround, which is still working well for me.

With this clarification provided he believes there must be a fault and that it needs to be booked in.

No mention of any known faults or software issues.

We'll see what happens first, the new software landing or my appointment on 8th November.

Can't say I am filled with confidence with the hybrid specialist's line of questioning.

I'm sorry to disappoint but I had the new update about a week ago and I see no improvement. The car always starts with the ICE and trying to select EV mode is met with it being unavailable. It can takes 4 to 5 miles before it will accept EV mode. Turning off the climate control will always let the EV mode be set, even on first start.

I’ve noticed a slight change with the latest software. Previously, once the ICE had started during a journey it would never turn off (even when stopped at a junction with climate turned off). You would have to turn the ignition off and on again to engage EV mode.

After the software update the car is more willing to switch between engine on and engine off modes during a journey. However, there are still quite a few occasions where EV mode is unavailable particularly with climate turned on.

The issue in my case is definitely a faulty high voltage coolant heater (as diagnosed by the dealer). It sounds to me like there has been a faulty batch of these as the issue seems to affect a number of vehicles. This heater also seems responsible for providing interior vehicle heating when the ICE is not running. Another symptom is that, if you precondition the car from the remote app when connected to the charger, the precondition will run for half an hour but there is no sign of any heat inside the vehicle when you come to get in.

I have the same issue. It always starts in hybrid mode after a full charge, and usually swapped to EV after 100 yards when I decelerated to turn. Occasionally it would take 5 miles and nothing would turn the petrol engine off, but it is now regularly stuck on petrol and displays the message ‘EV temporary unavailable’ for up to 5 miles. I do not fiddle with configuration, so it was random and is now getting worse. This means I can drive to the village to drop my wife off and be half way home before the EV is available, it then returns to petrol when I slow down to turn near home, so there is no benefit to having an EV.

The first service is due in 1250 miles, which will disappointingly be only 4500 miles driven, so I will be raising this issue when booking it in.

I’ve been having this issue for 4 or 5 weeks now. It seemed to coincide with notification that 1st service is due (1 year / 10k miles). Had it serviced yesterday hoping that any updates may alleviate the problem but no joy, still just the same. Never starts in EV even with heating and aircon off, will eventually allow EV mode after a few stop starts and some regenerative braking which seems to remind it that there’s an electric motor that can be used.
The car is now booked in for a ‘diagnostics’ visit with an EV specialist technician in a few weeks’ time to hopefully remedy the problem.

After running beautifully for the last couple of thousand miles (mostly in fully EV) I've now got a solid check engine light on the dashboard.

Have you got any way of plugging in and reading the fault codes? Might be something simple like a sensor giving off a bad value and doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a problem with the engine.

It'll still be saved in the OBD memory so definitely worth getting it checked out. Often lights like this will illuminate due to a sensor giving a reading outside normal parameters (almost always voltage based) and then after a certain number of restarts or miles if it doesn't occur again it will disappear indicating either a glitch or a intermittently faulty sensor or even bad connection.

Hi, new P300e owner here ( September 2021 ) - the car not turning off the engine randomly has been driving me batty - however, something I discovered was it is much worse when my wife is driving on her own, and I think I've found another reason for the engine not to turn off - she is a bit ahem lax in her seatbelt wearing, and it would appear that the car fires up the engine, and will only turn it off if occupants are wearing seatbelts... since I've nagged her to wear a seatbelt all the time, it seems much improved. My thinking behind this is that the manual states EV needs stop/start to be on, but the stop/start section also says stop/start requires seatbelts to work...

It does -seemingly at random- switch between ICE and electric, e.g. while standing still in a queue the ICE suddenly fires up to charge an almost fully charged battery ?! Start/stop is erratic too. For me the issue certainly seems linked to the heating/aircon. If heating is turned off altogether (fan speed turned to zero), the EV is available and works as it should do. I can even turn on the heated seats without affecting it. As soon as heating is turned on in any way, the “EV is temporarily unavailable”.

I’m afraid I will add my experience to a long list of similar issues. My car was registered in March 21 and like many others it ran in EV mode happily for a few months. Then after a couple of remote software updates - that incidentally caused a few other temporary glitches with the sound system and satnav- the problem of the EV being temporarily unavailable has got worse and worse. It even jumps out of EV mode when sat stationary at traffic lights! The car has been into JLR and had numerous software updates after diagnostic checks and they said that had sorted the problem. I hadn’t even got back in the motorway from the dealership and it started playing up again, so no improvement. It’s going in again for 2-3’days this week so will update if they manage to sort the issue.
As many of posts have stated, this is incredibly frustrating given we have paid around £55k for a car that doesn’t work! We based our affordability on the fact we would be saving a considerable amount on fuel as I only generally drive around 30miles a day max, which should be done on a full EV charge.
I will mention the volume of similar experiences to the dealership, watch this space!

It would be useful for us to post our software versions because some have suggested the problem was fixed with ‘the latest software’ and I have been waiting for this latest software for about a month now.

Mine is 2.1.3e installed 18th September.
