Shower when opening tailgate

My MY20 DS gives me a shower when opening the tailgate after a rainstorm. It happens on both sides and I am considering drilling a couple of holes in the plastic. Has anyone else seen this phenomenon or got a better fix ? Thanks

I picked up my DS on 3/9/16.

I will have a look at the fixings today around the boot.

I also have the 1600 RPM dashboard vibration!

Love the car but rapidly being put off!
LR won't discuss rejection until the welding has been tried.
I contacted Landrover customer services by phone, please do this and say you are unwilling to have the fix as you consider this to be a safety related issue and that you would have no confidence in the car after welding.
By welding they are admitting there is a fault in the b pillar welds which is safety related, they have sold you an unsafe car if hit side on.

I did this and many others have too.
I am awaiting my replacement at the moment as are others .
Make sure when you phone you get a case manager and a case number from them.
Do not leave it up to the dealer , this is a manufacturing defect you are in the driving seat.

There should be no need to have invasive welding on a brand new car !

How many people constitute the many others that are quoted. This figure should give a good idea of the enormity of this problem.

some dealers have estimated 2% of cars have the bpillar issue (reported) - the real number could be much larger.
This also matched some of our estimates on the forum

in the last 12 months, JLR sold ~100k cars. that means there are 2000 cars with the issue reported.
There are (and this is a guess - i.e. i have not counted) about 15 people on the forum presently going through rejection for Bpillar.

If you look through all the folks suffering on here as I did , many joined the forum long before they had the b pillar issue . This suggests that forum figures are important, whilst they do contain some people who's first post was b pillar, these are far and few between.when I checked. So these not all are first posters and figures are not wildly exaggerated as some seem to say or refer to.

I seriously do doubt the 2% figure as this was taken from one or two dealers remarks . My own dealer even tried to play down the issue and initially acted as if he had never heard of it, that was until I pointed out I knew of at least 3 at his own dealership of which he had personally delt with before mine. He then finally agreed to knowing about those. So I take what they say with a pinch of salt , how many more did he know about?

What about all those folks who are not on the forum ?
What about those that are hard of hearing , Are they at risk with a defective weld ?

Here's the pic I sent to NCAP today along with my email. Since this pic we have another 4 with the issue on this forum. Disturbingly the last one reported today also looks like an MY 17. Unless I'm mistaken that's now 2 X MY17 and it's not warmed up to summer temps yet.

Going back a few posts, I had the water issue when the boot opened. Went back to the dealer, they rectified it.

I also had the issue, after the repair, of the rear light clusters letting water in. Both sides were misting up, with no issues before the boot fix.

They replaced one and sealed the other rear light cluster on the boot. Issue hasn't come back.

They also changed the rear VRN lights. I don't know which of these caused the water ingress in to the lights, but I was fizzing with anger when I saw that the repair had caused the secondary issue.

Not sure that this is the same issue; when I open my wet tailgate the water runs down and drips onto the load space cover. If the cover happened to be retracted it would run onto whatever was in the boot !!!

Rather rubbish design I would say!! Not sure what they can do to fix it, but one day it will ruin something and I will be forced to complain.

With mine, the water would collect in the tailgate and run back out down my neck about 2 or 3 seconds after I opened it. It was just enough time for my to stick my head under and get wet.

It wasn't the end of the world, but it was really annoying that a new car would do that.

I asked if they were going to drill holes to let the water out, as mentioned on here earlier. They apparently seal up where the water gets in, rather than drill holes in the new car. All according to the LR service guy, so I dunno...

Thats not the case on my September'16 MY17.

I have the drilled holes, but just like Mamil's fantastic post here:
http://www.discosportforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=4099&p=44735&hilit=mamil+leak#p43089

They have only drilled 3 of the 5 holes on each side.

In fact, in that post Mamil suggested an adjustment to the design to mitigate the problem,Unless anyone knows different I suspect your service guy was misinformed, (although i would LOVE to find out that JLR were listening to customer suggestions like this)

I get the delayed soaking about 10 seconds after opening the tailgate on a rainy day, will bring it to the dealer's attention when she goes in for service .

I've had the same issues as others on this forum with water running into the boot after opening the tailgate. This was a bigger problem on the left side, rarely happening on the right. I too took it back to the dealers who enlarged the holes in the trim. Unfortunately this did not resolve my problem. On further inspection I decided to try to re-route the water by sticking gaffa tape across the rubber trim where the black wire enters it but leaving an escape route on the left of the trim. Doesn't look great but it seems to be working - for now! The water drips harmlessly into the frame gutter. Photo attached. Since writing this post some water did blow into the boot, I need to do some more homework!!

If you are still getting water dripping after the "fix" they haven't drilled holes in all the water traps

Subsequent to my last post I have taped across the top of the seal completely in an attempt to stop water getting into the seal. This does seem to be successful. Seeing my fix, the dealer has offered to replace my tape with some sealant but for the moment I will keep my repair and see how it goes on. Doesn't look great though!
I have also returned to the dealer as the interior trim across the top of the tailgate was coming loose and rattling. There was a clip missing from the left hand end and the dealer replaced that and the other 3 clips which have been modified since delivery of my car in September 2016. They have a chunkier black rubber seal which should be more serviceable, fingers crossed.

As a temporary measure try taping over the top of the seal where the black wire enters it. I've used gaffa tape which sticks surprisingly well and so far it has worked. I will take it to the dealer for them to seal it with proper compound. Their fix of enlarging the factory solution of drain holes in the trim didn't work. Cracking car let down by silly niggles.

I see there is a new technical bulletin on this and the tailgate creaking, anyone with a TOPIx sub care to take a look and tell us whats new ?

I took it in for service and asked for this problem to be sorted, even showed them the Service Bulletin document. Collected the car and was assured work had been done, and after the first rain I had water pouring out the same as before!!!

Booked it in again, but have to wait 6 weeks!

Is there any visual difference after the modification? Can I actually see anything different to tell me the work has been done? Any pictures from anybody showing the drain holes (if they are visible).

Only the drain hole on the bottom rubber flap is visible unless you take the pinch strip off, which isn't actually that difficult if you wanted to check they've done it properly.

Water exiting the tailgate on opening has got progressively worse and is now like a tap being turned on. I spoke to Rybrook two days ago and the mechanic said JLR know about it but don't have a fix yet. It's clear from these posts that JLR have known about the problem since as early as August 2015. If they knew in 2015 then their dealerships should have known about the problem. It appears that dealers continued selling cars with inherent known defects. I'm not impressed. Has anyone got more recent experience of this problem?

Correct Roadie, JLR have been knowingly ignoring a whole host of problems in order to be able to concentrate on the introduction of new models. A not uncommon practice but still not correct.
