Prospective DS Owner

Hello all,

I've been following this forum with interest for a few weeks and thought I'd sign up. Don't currently own a DS and probably won't be changing cars for 9-12 months but I like to start my research early. I'd set my heart on a DS, as I'm after a mid sized 'SUV' that offers occasional 7 seat flexibility, and it looks the business.

However reading this forum has scared the hell out of me! I currently drive a 2 yr old BMW 520d M Sport Touring which I've owned from new, and before that an S-Max Titanium Sport for 5 years, also from new, and I've had 7 years trouble free motoring.

It sounds like that run could end with a DS (!) but I'll continue to follow things with interest as I consider my options.

Every car is a 'potential liability',

Most car companies are the same IMO.

Correct, but while all animals might be equal some animals are still more equal than others (imho) :D
With one big part of the solution being how the manufacturer and its dealers deal with issues when raised. This is where LR fall down big time.
Yes you are likely to get problems with any car, what you don't want is all the hassle that goes with dealing with LR and it's arrogance

To be fair, it's not just users of this forum. There are more than 6,500 words of complaint on Honest John alone, which takes 10 pages of A4 to print off. This is an unprecedented "achievement" and it demonstrates clearly that this is much more than a whinge about the diesel issue described in JLRP00100. I wish everyone with one of these cars the best of luck but the evidence that the car is a potential liability cannot be denied. Potential owners ought to know this.

To be fair...
Most of that was posted by the same people that post here.

That is very true, indeed word for word in some cases.

Personally I don't rate HJ and some of his advice is utter b******s, however, many people use such websites when making making buying decisions and as ever there is no smoke without fire.

Under the Good/Bad tab for the DS there are currently 74 x "things to look for", 54 x "complaints received" and 12 x recalls listed!

For my E Class (a car which has been on the market 12 months less but still in excess of 2 years here in UK), the are 4 x "things to look for", no complaints received" and 4 x recalls listed (1 of which doesn't actually apply to the E Class and none of which have affected any car built in the last 12 months).

No smoke without fire...Oh and (in UK) a top spec E220d Est SE is less than an HSE Lux DS!

Yesterday when I was doing about 75 down the M6 there was a crunch from the back wheel arch like I'd run over a traffic cone. I got out to have a look as soon as i could and found the bottom piece of the drivers door was missing.
Similar happened to me - the grey plastic trim on the bottom of the passenger door just dropped off. Clicked back into place and all seems OK....until the next time.

Overall thought I am now 2 years in with my DS and it's been very good. I'm thinking of changing but only because I'm now doing more motorway miles due to a job change and may need to go with a more economical vehicle, so 4 wheel drive may be sacrificed in favour of MPG. That said after 2 years of depreciation (I bought new) I may be better sticking with the DS having funded that depreciation. I'm unsure really...

I will have had my car a year on 1 August, currently done 11,500 miles. I have not had a single issue with the car and only been back to the dealership to have a coffee with the salesman!
I am very happy with the vehicle particularly the way it drives and obviously it's capability in the snow we had this year. I have owner BMW's and Lexii and can't say it is any better or worse regarding build quality.
Fuel consumption is not great - currently getting 37.81mpg but it is a heavy, un-aerodynamic car!
I accept I will have to have services every 12,000 miles but I knew that before I bought the car as i know a JLR engine designer and he advised me to get oil changes done on the Ingenium diesel!!!
To conclude, I will almost definitely have another in 2 years, probably a petrol hybrid when they are available.

Hello Zedman, it's a joy to hear from a really satisfied DS owner. Oh how I wish ours had been so trouble free. Keep on enjoying it. :D
Thanks Chippy.

I forgot to add that the occasional use of the 7 seats is a big plus for me too now we have 5 grandchildren!

PS How's the Evoque going?
