B Pillar Problem Solved

After nearly two years we've at last solved our B pillar problem. At least we were quicker than LR

How some might ask. We rejected the second culprit and are now driving a rattle free Evoque.

I'm aware of the fact that there is still the oil dilution problem but not driving more than about 7000 miles a year we can easily live with it even though it's not right.

Hi Bolt, our second DS was just under five months old and had slightly over 4000 km on he clock. It was a bit of a struggle but fully supported by our dealer.

Thanks Barnsh. The first impressions are positive. Solidly built, higher quality interior parts, excellent workmanship on the leather seats, no rattles or the like, a nice driving position and last not least a height adjustment on the passenger seat belt for SWMBO!

Hi all, I got out as well... now have a new xc60 d4 inscription...

I can't believe that they actually make a car this good! So quiet it's as though the B-Pillars don't exist!

I have to say, I'm unhappy to leave the DS behind as it just could have been such a great car but let down by poor build and a reluctance to fix a known problem for just too long that impacted many. I expect it is a great vehicle for many, but for me twice burned was just too much.

Some may say I've moved to the dark side so be it. I expect that my 2nd DS will be subjected to the v6 fix ad then onsold maybe to someone with a hearing problem and they will love it like I couldn't.

As soon as I get some pics together of the xc I'll post em if I'm allowed.

Regards to all David

Glad your all sorted David, you had an horrendous struggle with them. It' really is an eye opener to see people having to reject two cars with this same issue , the chances of this happening twice to an owner does not bode well, as your not the only one to have to do this.

Feel free to post the new car in off topic it will be good to hear some owner comparisons of the car and about the automated safety systems if you have those.
Happy motoring !

Hi David

I'm very pleased to hear that you've got things sorted even though, as was the case for us, it may not really have been what you wanted. I really hope that you enjoy the Volvo. The Swedes always did build very solid vehicles and it sounds as though that hasn't changed.

Enjoy Chippy. Good to hear you got out of the rattler into a solidly built car.
Thanks Simon. We've just arrived back from a few days at our daughters and it was a joy not to hear the assorted ticks and rattles that we'd become used to in the DS.

Hi Chippy,
Good to hear you are happy with your Evoque.
I'm thinking of going that route myself. I'm on a budget so will either be a used 2.2L or very low mileage 2L so I know no damage has been done(!) - but now I'm worried that any nearly new vehicle is up for sale as it's been rejected for some fault or other!

Or a slim chance I'll go for a bottom of the range new one. But the more I read, I don't want all the associated AdBlue issues and possible short journey DPF problems with Euro 6. But as I'm a worrier - I also don't like what the UK Gov. might do for pre-EU6 engines!!!

Any pics of your Evoque? I see you over on the Evoque Owners website but don't think I've seen any pics there either :)

While I'm posting...
I was in a LR dealers on Thursday looking at a few cars - friendly chatty sales rep.
He was aware of the oil dilution issues but not the B pillar ticking. I asked if he knew if any cars had been rejected as this was news to me when I joined this forum - he was. He said the last one was for fumes from the DPF re-gen.

While I was there I also asked if he's seen many cracked pano roofs as I also see this as a problem so don't want one if I have the choice. He said yes the latest one was a customer earlier that day! The driver saw a stone coming their way though rather than a body flexing crack.

Previous years of pain, maybe the DS needs a few more years in production yet.
Mine is quite though and I still enjoy it , It seems that all the right folks at Halewood put it together well.

Its really odd that both these cars come down the same production line but the Evoque is so much better than the DS, any ideas?

In my humble opinion the reason is mainly due to the added pressure to save costs on newer models such as the DS. This was immediately apparent when I started comparing say certain finishing features on the two models. The car they turn out can at best only be as good as the bits they have to put it together.

HmmmUK, based on my first few days of ownership I'd thoroughly recommend taking a serious look at the Evoque as an alternative.

I'll put up some pictures as soon as I'm able to find time - you maybe know how it is with us pensioners :D

Hi Chippy
A good friend of mine has an evoque and loves it, he let me have a long drive of it whilst making my decision between the DS and evoque.
I did like the evoque and sort of no what you mean about the interior finishes being better.
Having said all that I found the DS to feel a lot more spacious inside and felt like you were driving a mid size off roader where as the evoque felt like a large estate like car, to be honest I also prefer the exterior look of the DS.
No doubt it helps me like the DS more than some as so far I have no ticking, rattles or squeaks.
Anyway enjoy the evoque they are in my opinion both great cars.

Hi Adi,

Thanks for your comments. You're quite right in saying that the DS is more spacious and, of course, as a larger boot than the Evoque. Since there are nearly always only two of us in the car neither of these present us with problems. The towing capability of the DS may no doubt be better than the Evoque but we can live with that as well. The main thing is that we're rid of the B pillar ticking for the first time in two years.

Hi Chippy
You are right, the b pillar ticking would drive me mad too if I had it, in fact I spent the first week of getting the car listening for it with the radio off but so far so good. If it does come I will probably be messaging you asking how the evoque is going :)
Enjoy the car and especially the peace and quiet.

Hi David,

I've had the B pillar issue since January 2016, versions 1,3,4 & 6 all failed.
It's back at the dealer right now, I've demanded a replacement / refund.
Are you able to contact me or offer how you managed to get your car replaced?
