You can check the version of the software in Settings, System. The latest version is 3.4 and is in the long "Jacinto Version" string (JLR_3.4...….
In short no, not by the owner. Only LR dealers can update the 8 inch unit unfortunately, and it would appear development of that unit is now at an end with all models moving to the 10 inch screens.
Just had my second annual service (my18) and the software for the 8" screen was updated from JLR_3.3 to JLR_3.6. So looks like 3.6 is now the latest for the smaller screen. To see what version you are on select FM radio. On the FM screen hold down the source button (for several seconds) until you get the service screen.

Interesting, I wonder if that only applies to the newer 8" meridian system or the older 8" non Meridian?
Anyone able to find out what 3.6 fixes/does?. If I recall, you had to quote a named fault that the software fixes to convince the workshop to update it. Or will they just do it now if their diagnostic kit agrees its suitable for your car and you ask them?
